Things I Learned From Freshman Year Sleep When Im feeling irritable and/or stressed, I dislike empty advice. I particularly loathe the phrase “work smarter not harder”, probably because it was said to me many times last year by half-hearted well-intentioners who wished to somehow alleviate my IHTFP feelings (then negative) but couldn’t think of better advice. I don’t blame them, certainly, they were just trying to be positive. Still, I don’t believe in blanket statements. I like details, caveats, and qualifications. I like taking a little bit of this and that and putting it together into what works for me. I hate those cliche commands”Work smarter not harder” “Be more focused” “Be more efficient”because they never tell you how to do any of that, and though the sentiments behind those goals are good, I’ve never found them actually very helpful. Summer is a good time for planning and reflection. My nerdy corner of Tumblr is where I put a lot of this reflection. In particular, I seem to have an obsession with productivity for the pure sake of productivity, analyzing and re-analyzing my personal behavior, and, as can happen anywhere on the internet, I was surprised in the last couple years to find an entire niche community of peoplecalled “studyblrs”, and consisting largely of college studentsthat had created a space for expressing this obsession, among other study and work-related pursuits. Indulge me.) Studying/Academic Work (^how to make studying for finals in December cozy) I have had ADHD since I was a small child. I’ve now (presumably) grown out of it, to the point that for a time I wondered if my diagnosis had been false. After a lot of personal reflection and research (and realizing I trusted my doctor immensely) I realized that it was definitely not false, and whats more, some of the effects still linger. I have tried, in the past year, to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate my work habits. Instead of fighting against my own strange idiosyncrasies with traditional studying or work techniques, I decided to allow them to exist, work around them, and hopefully take advantage of them. Most importantly, this involves realizing what they are. I noticed that the following occurs when I am very stressed/tired/etc., since it is the behavior I exhibited during the end of finals when I was already burnt out, but still needed to cram. Some of it is rather odd, but there you have it. Since this is the case at an extreme, I hope that if I take action in accordance with these behaviors even when I am not as worn out, my productivity levels will increase. I work best in 2-hour intervals, preferably there is a change of location between each interval (e.g., library?coffee shop?library?home) When I am feeling exceptionally tired and unproductive, I should just give in and sleep/nap. This will make me more productive later. I work best in the early morning or the evening, I work worst in the afternoon (around 2-6pm) If I have a whole day to work, regardless of when I go to bed I should just get up early and then take a nap in the afternoon, because getting up later than 7:30AM throws me off (in the spring time that is; this is probably a different time interval for the fall/winter when the sun rises later) Although I enjoy listening to music while studying, I work best when I do not listen to music. The best sound environment is the library, or a cafe when quiet, around other people working. Sometimes, music is good to start my work, because it makes me feel less stressed and more comfortable, but as my concentration mounts its best to turn it off. Other people working influences me to work. This is why libraries and cafes are good environments. I do not work well in my own room/home. The worst work environments are: 1. by myself in my own room anytime before 10pm. 2. around other people not working/only sort of working/talking/etc. Physical movement is the best break (walking from one location to another, stretching, taking a walk, doing ab exercises, etc.) Watching things/writing distracts me for too long a period of time. If I am feeling particularly lazy, it helps to find someone disciplined/equally worried about the next test or assignment/etc. to work with. We can then explain things to each other without distracting each other. In Hayden library, although I like the window seats, I work best at the long outlet tables, preferably when other people are working there. The best way for me to study/work is to first organize information and then problem solve/do examples. If I try to do this in reverse order I get easily discouraged when a problem is hard. Passive studying first, active studying second, but in short blocks of passive-active, passive-active, passive-active, by subject material. When I feel overwhelmed when studying (all the time) it is best to first make a study plan, whether I follow it or not. A study plan involves writing down all resources, practice exams or problems, available notes and relevant topics. I can organize these into what will help me most and/or what I should do first. Making a plan calms me down and allows me to focus. Sleep Ideally, I would always get 7 hours of sleep a night. More often I get about 6 hours of sleep a night. This is doable for the week, but I have to rest well on weekends. If there is a test the next day, I have to get at least 6 hours of sleep the night before. If I get 5 or fewer hours of sleep, I have to get 7+ hours the next night. I have to wake up before 8:00AM at the latest, or else I am significantly less productive the rest of the day. Classes after 3pm are hard to sit through; it is preferable to start early and end early. I usually cannot work efficiently after 2AM if I am problem solving or studying If I am writing a paper, I cannot work efficiently after 4AM. Naps are great. Take them, but not for more than an hour. Food (^my roommate and I killed the cooking game over IAP) Breakfast should be light and late. Eating too early makes me hungrier the rest of the day, and there’s no point in forcing my metabolism to start up before it’s ready. Lunch or dinner should also be light, and potentially split into twice a day or interspersed throughout the day. Eating less food but more frequently is most effective; I usually feel awfully tired or uncomfortable after a full meal. It’s important not to drink coffee too regularly. When there’s a less stressful week of work, take a detox (no coffee or even tea the whole week). This will also keep smaller amounts of caffeine more effective when you do drink it. If you’re hungry late at night, go ahead and eat to maintain your energy, but try to eat fruit or nuts or yogurt or something healthier. Drink lots of water with it. A Note on Food: college students (and most definitely MIT students) usually have a less regular schedule, and often longer days. We don’t wake up at 8 and sleep at 8 every dayif you do, you’re very on top of things, but it’s my belief that you don’t have to do that to be on top of things, especially if, like me, you know that’s never gonna happen. People say this irregular schedule contributes to the Freshman 15, but I don’t think it has to. Rather, pay close attention to when you get hungry. Throw away social norms, and just plan to eat whenever and how often you get hungryfrequently, but in smaller amounts of healthier food. If you always get hungry at midnight, consider splitting your dinner into two parts, or just eat later, or plan for healthy night snacks. If you are always hungry every four hours, bring granola bars or whatever to class. Drink lots of water, especially late at night and whenever you’re tired. Next year, I’m going completely off the meal plan and cooking for myself, so I’m trying to get a really good idea of exactly what my needs are, for my own health.and the health of my bank account. My life as a teenager would soon be coming to an end and my life as mommy would be coming up faster then expected. It all started June 10th 2012, my family and I had just finished eating our dinner celebrating my achievement of getting my GED. I had received cards, gifts, and even some money from my family members for finally receiving this GED after being out of school for my senior year. Unfortunately their happiness would soon be long gone. For it was the night before this that I had five different tests all of which said the same thing in different ways, I was pregnant. I was not ready for this kind of responsibility. I was not ready physically, emotionally, and financially to take care of even myself yet now I had to find a way to provide all of those things for a child. I was only seventeen, turning eighteen in July; I was still a child myself. To many people I would be viewed as a delinquent because of getting pregnant. On the other hand, others might have seen this coming since my mom also had me at a young age. Many also believe all teens who get pregnant will fail. Although these beliefs and views from others were in my head at the time, I knew I needed to tell my family I was pregnant, find out how far along I was, and make a life changing decision. When I decided to tell my mom and stepdad I was terrified. I was so scared they would shun me and tell me they didn’t want me to live with them and they wouldn’t be supportive. I was also afraid my mother would be disappointed in me for following in her footsteps. To my surprise, their reaction was actually the opposite of that. They didn’t judge me at all. In fact they both hugged me and reassured me that everything would be okay and we would all get through this together, like family should. After telling my mom and stepdad I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders because I knew I had the support I needed. My dad on the other hand was not as supportive. He judged me right away and told me I was just trying to be like the people on the shows Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. He also told me he was disappointed and pretty much shunned me from his life just as he had did to my mom when she was pregnant with me. I was so upset he automatically assumed I was pregnant because of shows on the T. V. However I was even more upset he treated me the same way he treated my mom. My own father, along with many other people, believed I was influenced by people and things around me to become pregnant. Although my dad and other people viewed me as a disgrace and a copy cat, I didn’t let that affect me because I had other things to worry about. One of which was how far along I was. My mom already was way ahead of me for this situation and already called for an appointment with Mayo Clinic to find out how far along I was and to meet my doctor. When we finally went to the exam room, after countless minutes in the waiting room, the nurse revealed to me that I was eight weeks pregnant. After she went through about forty questions asking about my health she began telling me about services that would help me. Such as: social workers, the WIC program, public health nurses, and counseling groups for young mothers. She also had me do a number of tests to see if I was on drugs or under the influence of some sort. My mom was a little skeptical of this because when she was pregnant with my younger sisters, at a far older age than me, the doctors and nurses did not offer her all these programs nor did they make her take as many drug tests. So the fact that I was a teenager who was pregnant the medical professionals needed to offer these sorts of programs and do those tests. They believed out of most pregnant women that teens will need the most help so they do not fail. I was a teenager and was going to become a teenage mother. The thought of that still gives me shivers to this day. Maybe I did need the extra help to lower the chances of failing. Even though these thoughts of failing were present I wanted to look into the other options I had. For the first option adoption, I knew this would be a perfect opportunity to find a family that was more than capable of raising my child and giving it a better life than I could. This option would also give me the opportunity to better my life by going through school without having to worry about a crying baby. However I knew people who have done adoption and they seemed so sad and depressed that their child called some other woman their mom. This made me reconsider the option because I was afraid of just that; seeing my child calling another family theirs. For the second option abortion, I knew that this would be an easy way out. This would be the best way to forget about the whole situation but it was also wrong and a cruel thing to do. If I were to get an abortion I would not only throw myself into the wagon of ‘bad people’ and ‘killers’ but I would get judged by every person who knew of my pregnancy. Since adoption and abortion were both a no go, I only had one option left; to raise the baby myself. This idea frightened me, and I even went back and tried to convince myself that adoption would be a better option. Raising a baby would be stressful and very difficult but the outcome would be worth it. So maybe I could be able to raise a child, I had the support of my family, had a job, and also had enough programs to help me through it all. All of which would lower the chances of me failing. Now all i needed was the little voice in my head to say â€Å"you can do it†. To this day that little voice is screaming those four words louder than ever. Even though others view me as a misfit, disgrace, or a follower to those around me; I know I will do the best I can possibly do to not fail, and to also provide my son with the chance of a good life. By getting the support from at least some of my family members, finding out how far along I was, and choosing the right option to take; I know I can make it through this. I was going to be a teenage mother but I am enrolled in fall courses at RCTC, working food service at Mayo Clinic, and basically growing up for the sake of my child’s future: therefore I could in fact do it, I could raise a child on my own. Labour was the first political party in Great Britain to stand for the representation of the low-paid working class and it is the working class who are known as the Labour Party grassroots and traditional members and voters. The Conservative Party on the other hand, descended from the Tory Party, founded in 1678, and is still often referred to as the Tory Party and its politicians, members and supporters as Tories. It was also known as the Unionist Party in the early 20th century, following the Conservatives' alliance with that part of the Liberal Party, known as the Liberal Unionists, who opposed their party's support for Irish Home Rule. The Irish Home Rule Movement articulated a longstanding Irish desire for the repeal of the Act of Union of 1800 by a demand for self-government within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Conservative Party is considered the centre-right political party in the United Kingdom. Moderate Two Party System? The effectiveness of the party system in Parliament depends on the relationship between the Government and the Opposition parties. Even though they oppose each other, they still help each other in a way the the opposition: contributes to the creation of policy and legislation through constructive criticism, opposes government proposals they disagree with, and they put forward their own policies in order to improve their chances of winning the next general election. These things give the party seated choices and other options to ensure that their actions contribute to the betterment of the whole country. Electoral Systems and Voting Behavior The question now is how they are elected. The UK has four types of electoral systems. The first one is the most used, the First Past the Post system. It is the one used to elect the MP’s that seat in the House of Commons. There is a single winner and that is the person with the most votes; there is no requirement that the winner gain an absolute majority of votes. The next system is the block/bloc voting, used in local government elections in England and Wales. It is a voting system for electing several representatives from a single multimember electoral district using a series of check boxes and tallying votes similar to the First Past the Post system. Next is the single transferable vote system, used in Northern Ireland to elect the Assembly, local councils, and Members of the European Parliament, and in Scotland to elect local councils. It is a preferential voting system designed to minimize â€Å"wasted† votes, provide proportional representation, and ensure that votes are explicitly cast for individual candidates rather than party lists. Last is the Party-list system, used in the European Parliament elections in England, Scotland and Wales. It is a voting system that emphasizes proportional representation in elections returning multiple candidates. Voters directly vote for the party. For the past few elections, it is sad to say that the trend in the UK’s voters turnout is not that pleasing to see. Turnout has fallen from 77% in 1992, 71% in 1997 and 61% in 2001. There had been a slight increase in the 2005 elections but still, it is really low. Now the question is what explains these behaviors. Reasons like the lack of variation in the ideologies of the main parties, the decline in partisanship, the reduction in the popularity of various Party leaderships, the dissatisfaction with parties' record on public services, education, transport etc. , the lack of interest in the election campaigns and the voter’s apathy due to voters believing their vote will have no effect on the overall outcome. People often have a mind set that their voteis not needed anymore that is why they are contented by just letting the elections pass by. The book by Catherine Churchill titled ‘Cloud Nine’ provides insight into the two very different types of societies in the two acts of the book and depicts the change in the characters in terms of their femininity and sexual orientation. The diverse factors impacting the lives of the characteristics like power, wealth and politics as well as their ion satisfactions levels in different relationships have been discussed through the use of comedy and the art of storytelling. The book highlights the concepts of feminism and queer theory through its content and the way the lives of the characters play out in the two different acts of the book. Feminism is basically defined as the change or orientation towards women empowerment. It is made up of the social, cultural as well as the political reforms, movements and diverse theories which contribute towards equality between makes and females and highlights the equal rights movement for the women. The basis of feminism is the exhalation of the position of women in the society. Queer Theory on the other hand is a branch of gender studies which pertains to the gay and lesbian studies. This field is specific to diverse sexual orientation in women and takes its foundation form the feminism movement and theory itself. The inclination towards feminism in the book and the play of Cloud Nine is very explicit as depicts how the women are oppressed in the Victorian era so much so that they are forced to disguise themselves as men to hide their feminine identity when giving in to their strong nature and ambitions. The play clearly and explicitly describes the differences in the roles of the women and the men in the Victorian era, and in the modern era, therefore depicting how they have changed to an extent, but not as much as they should have. in the first act the play violently depicts the male oriented society by initiating with a welcome for the male gender, and present the allude of power, in context of economics as held by men in the society. Aside from this the play also depicts the position of the women in history as the subservient gender. This established the concept that the role and cultural construction of the females in the society is a product more of history and tradition than of their own capabilities, thus reinforcing the concept of feminism. The queer theory is expanded upon by the author in the play though the confused sexual orientation of the characters and the cross dressing and role reversal amongst the cast in the play. â€Å"Churchill clearly intended to raise questions of gender, sexual orientation, and race as ideological issues; she accomplished this largely by cross-dressing and role-doubling the actors, thereby alienating them from the characters they play. † (Worthen, 807). The characters in the play like those of Gerry the homosexual man and the lesbian mother provide the essence of the queer theory. In fact it can even be mentioned that Cloud Nine is an explicitly queer play. The structure of the play is very confusing for the audience as well as the readers due to the role reversals by the characters, and the language used in the play is highly oriented towards the depiction of feminism and queer theory. The play clearly points out the underlying issues in the societies pertaining to women oppression, women’s rights as well as gay pride and sexual orientation of the men and women. Moreover the play is highly political in nature as it tends to shock the audience and the readers through the presentation and the roles played by the characters. On the whole however the play contributes towards the literary identity development of women in the modern society.
